Wood fences in Long Beach

Wood is still the go-to for backyard privacy. It looks warm, it's easy to repair one board at a time, and it can be stained to match your house.

What kind of wood do you use?

Mostly cedar and redwood. Both hold up to weather and bugs better than plain pine, and both take stain well. We'll show you samples and talk through the trade-off between price and grade.

Posts matter more than boards. We'll talk with you about pressure-treated wood or steel posts, set in concrete, so the fence stays straight for years.

What styles can you build?

  • Good-neighbor: boards alternate sides, so both yards see a finished face. A good fit for a shared property line.
  • Horizontal slat: a clean, modern look that works well with newer remodels.
  • Board-on-board: overlapping boards with no gaps, even after the wood shrinks.
  • Picket: a low, open fence for front yards.

How tall can a wood fence be in Long Beach?

Under the Long Beach zoning code, a residential fence in the front yard setback is generally limited to 3 feet, and a side or back yard fence to 6 feet 6 inches. A wood fence up to 6 feet 6 inches doesn't need a building permit, but the city's Planning Bureau still has to approve its location and height. Full details are in our fence permit guide.

What does a wood fence cost?

As of October 2026, Angi's national cost guide lists wood fences at about $10 to $45 per linear foot installed. Height, board grade, style and how many gates you need move the price the most. We give you a written number after we measure. See how much a fence costs in Long Beach.

How do I make a wood fence last near the coast?

Keep soil and mulch off the bottom boards, aim sprinklers away from the fence and reseal or restain every few years. Within a short walk of the sand, ask for stainless or hot-dipped galvanized nails and screws so the hardware doesn't streak or rust. Our salt air guide goes deeper.

Is wood the right choice for me?

It depends. If you want the most privacy for the money and don't mind some upkeep, wood is hard to beat. If you'd rather never paint or stain again, look at vinyl fences. If your wood fence just needs a few posts or boards, start with fence repair.
